Some People Call Me the Kitchen Whisperer

Like Michael Scott says, the introduction of a speech or toast (or blog post in this case) is the most important, so sometimes it’s good to try out a few at once to see what kind of reaction you get. If it were socially appropriate to do so, I’d actually write the four or five intros I’ve typed out over the last my-baby’s-nap timeframe. Alas, I can’t think of anything to write that doesn’t make me feel awkward talking about myself. So if you sense any weird insecure-teenager vibes from what you’re about to read, it’s because they’re there.

I’m here to introduce myself, tell you that you’ll be hearing from me more often over here in the Seek neighborhood, and maybe get you to like me a little bit. See? Weird and awkward and I totally feel like I’m holding a wobbly cafeteria tray as I fearfully ask if I can sit with you. Maybe it’s the sleep deprivation from the aforementioned new baby, or maybe I’m just normal. Please tell me I’m normal.

My name is Kendra, and I own My First Kitchen. I wanted to make a career out of talking about food, and MFK was the result. Three years ago, I started teaching cooking classes in my home for small groups of folks. Since then, I’ve started a food blog where I share recipes and tips and my personal philsophy on food, I’ve written a few articles for Paula Deen’s website (craziness times twelve), and I’ve catered or hosted dozens of food-focused events like birthday parties, wedding showers, corporate team builders, and anything else I can cram food into. It’s the greatest job ever.

The one place I have no fear is in my kitchen, and if you get me talking about food on any level, I will hunker down and effortlessly enter a marathon conversation about how beautiful Swiss chard is and why chocolate speaks to us emotionally. I have a passion for food that is only rivaled by my passion for my family and LOST (don’t judge… it’s a rockin’ show), and I love to share that passion with others.

The reason people have called me The Kitchen Whisperer? Or have told me that they hear my voice inside their heads while they’re cooking? Because I care. I care about food, and I care about you. I want to give you the tools you need (and the ones you already have that you don’t know about) to allow cooking to inspire your life. It’s possible, even if you hate cooking or think you can never do it well. I love proving people wrong.

I’m a Greensboro girl born and bred, so I love this opportunity to share my passion with you – my awesome community. I’ll be around here often, but if you’d like to come see what I do, please visit my website, email me, or better yet, come to one of my cooking classes! I’m doing one in two weeks on local food. We’re cooking the same meal twice – one using local ingredients and one store-bought. We’ll learn some great cooking skills and get some ideas about local food at the same time. If you’d like more information or want to sign up (MJ and Trish are going to be there!), visit the Greensboro section of My First Kitchen for more details! And now I’m going to stop talking about myself. Whew!

Thanks for letting me be awkward, friends. Can I call you that already? Because I’d like to. I hope I get to meet you soon.

So Triad, do you see why we feel in love with Kendra and MFK!?!

I loved Kendra’s site. I could not find the class she spoke about in a few weeks but would love to come. I find it hard to cook now when the weather is so great outside; I get really rushed. I loved what she shared about canned tomatoes. I often put chicken breast with broth and canned tomatoes in the crockpot and simmer low all day; then use the meat over pasta adding a few veggies or in burritos. I can usually get 2 meals. It also works with beef using beef broth and tomatoes.
