The nurses and staff work extra hard everyday to prove to families that these children matter and make a difference in our community. We receive support for our entire family, have an on call Nurse 24 hrs. , and they are just simply “THERE” for the trials & tribulations which goes along with having a special needs child who suffers from many medical issues. Sally Irvin is the Associate Director for Faculty Services & Technology and an Adjunct Professor of Law at Wake Forest School of Law. She teaches Legal Research and Advanced Legal Research. Sally is an advocate for women’s heart disease and serves on the Governing Board of WomenHeart, The National Coalition For Women With Heart Disease. In 2005 she was chosen to attend the Mayo Clinic Science and Leadership Symposium, co-sponsored by WomenHeart, which educates women to promote quality of life and healthcare for all women living with heart disease locally and nationally. She has served on the American Heart Association’s North Carolina Public Policy Committee and currently serves as a member of the American Heart Association’s Winston-Salem Go Red For Women Leadership Council and its North Carolina Advocacy Coordinating. She also serves on the Public Awareness Committee of the North Carolina Justus-Warren Task Force on Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention.

• Greensboro Goes RED!
Wear your red and join the American Heart Association on Friday, February 5 at noon at Center City Park, for the first annual Greensboro Goes Red event. A brief program will take place with Budd Berro from Governor Perdue’s office, Nancy Vaughn, Mayor Pro Tem, local survivors, Dr. Paula Ross, Tracey McCain from WFMY News 2, Ricky Proehl and Rod & Lora from WMAG. Prize drawings will be held and light refreshments will be provided by Panera Bread. At the conclusion of the program, take part in the first-ever Greensboro Goes Red aerial photo!

• Winston-Salem Goes Red with Mayor Joines
Join us on Friday, February 5 at 11 a.m. at City Hall for Mayor Joines’ Go Red Event with the American Heart Association and Forsyth Medical Center. A proclamation will be read and a program will include local women survivors. Drawings will also take place. Wear your red that day and join us for the 2nd annual City Hall Goes Red Official Photo.

• FREE Screening for PAD
FREE “Dare to Care” Peripheral Artery Disease education program and screening, just for women. Led by physicians, the program will include a free screening to examine arteries in your neck, abdomen and legs. Location: Forsyth Medical Center conference center, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem. To register, call 1-888-844-0080 and specify the Dare to Care program.

• Have a HEART at Gateway YWCA
Wear red for women and girls on National Wear Red Day! For girls 18 or younger, come and join in the fun on Friday, February 5 at the Gateway YWCA in Winston-Salem from 4 – 5:30 p.m. for a youth health and activities fun fair!

• Wear Red Sale
Macy’s is having their annual Wear Red Sale from February 3 – February 7th to benefit Go Red For Women and the American Heart Association. Customers wearing red will receive 20% off sale, clearance and select regular purchases throughout the store or 10% off all jewelry and sale/clearance watches. If you don’t wear red, purchase a red dress pin at Macy’s that day for $2 and get your great sale prices. All proceeds from pin sales go to Go Red For Women!

• Sweet Potatoes & Dewey’s Go Red
On Friday, February 5, wear red and dine at Sweet Potatoes or pick up a heart cake square from any Dewey’s location and a portion of the proceeds go the American Heart Association! Enjoy fun dining and helping our community at the same time.

• Black & Gold Goes RED at WFU
Wake Forest University is going red with a wine tasting event on February 11 from 7-9 p.m. at Benson University Center at the Wake Forest University Campus in rooms 409/410. Wednesday, Feb. 3 through Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010 Macy’s will conduct a Wear Red Sale to raise funds and awareness for Go Red For Women. Customers who wear red will receive all-day savings throughout the store. Customers not wearing red can purchase a Red Dress pin for $2 and receive the all-day savings. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the pins will be donated to the cause.

During this same time period the U.S. population will grow by only 28 percent. The women of the Triad are joining with the women around the nation to Go Red For Women on Friday, February 5, National Wear Red Day, and throughout February, American Heart Month.

NC Attorney General Warning about Haiti reelief efforts:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s attorney general is warning residents to be sure that the money they donate to relief efforts in Haiti isn’t actually going to a scam artist.

Attorney General Roy Cooper is asking people to do their homework so their contributions can do the the most good possible.

Cooper’s Consumer Protection Division has not yet received complaints from North Carolina consumers about fraudulent fundraising efforts for Haiti relief.

To avoid scams and make sure your donations go to legitimate charities, Cooper warns people not to respond to unsolicited e-mails and text messages asking you to donate. He said people should watch out for pushy telemarketers, don’t give cash and protect your personal information.

Cooper also suggests checking out charities before giving.

As we mentioned earlier, SEEK will be highlighting one local charity a month to inspire your giving spirits throughout the year. This month we are featuring Family Support Network of Central NC. This group offers so much to those families who have been in the NICU at birth or have children with special needs. FSN has so may ways you can help, weather it’s volunteering your time, money or attending one of their fun and inspiring annual events. FSN is an incredible place to go for an abundance of support, education and fun for families with children who need help.

Family Support Network of Central Carolina

Family Support Network of Central Carolina (formerly FSN of Greater Greensboro) is a non-profit organization which was organized in 1989 by a coalition of parents, medical professionals, and staff from community agencies serving children with special needs and their families. In-kind support, including office space, was provided by Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. The office was later moved to Women’s Hospital of Greensboro, a member of the Moses Cone Group of Health Services. Program development was guided by Family Support Network of North Carolina, an affiliate of the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with offices in Carrboro, N.C. In the ensuing years, we have maintained our close affiliation with Moses Cone Hospital, and continue to be located within the Neonatal Medicine Department at Women’s Hospital of Greensboro.

Family Support Network of Central Carolina (FSN-CC) serves families whose children have been diagnosed with a special need or chronic illness, or who have been born prematurely. Our catchment area encompasses Guilford, Rockingham, Randolph , Alamance and Caswell counties. Our board of directors is made up of both parents and professionals, with parents representing the majority. FSN-CC offers a variety of services to families

When a child is born prematurely or diagnosed with a disability, a family’s world can be turned upside-down. Our services are designed to make this experience easier for families by providing parent-to-parent support from others who have “been there;” information on local agencies and resources; easy-to-read, family-friendly information to help you understand your child’s diagnosis and treatment options; and much, much more.

The Family Support Network of Central Carolina serves North Carolina families in Alamance, Caswell, Guilford, Randolph, and Rockingham Counties. All of our services are confidential, and offered at little or no cost to families. (Scholarships are available for programs with a fee.) Wow, that’s practically a third of the state!

Shane’s is the oldest sporting clays range in North Carolina, has the state’s tallest tower shot, and is the only outdoor shooting range in Guilford County. Shane describes Sporting Clays as, “Golf with a Shotgun”! We had a total of 125 female shooters (a record for Shane’s), 180 attendees and raised over $7000 in one afternoon to help fight breast cancer!

They have helped raise funding for several different non-profits including the Boy Scouts of America, Young Life, Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test and Ducks Unlimited (just to name a few). Shane’s Sporting Clays and the Naylor family also host an annual event called the “Drake Naylor Invitational“. In the past four years, they have raised an astounding $215,000 for the Greensboro Cerebral Palsy Assocociation, where their son attends school at the Gateway Education Center.
